299 Arthorus Golf Classic

Kingsboro, AROS -- The IGT finally came
to the New Continents this weekend, with the playing of the Arthorus Classic
in Aros!
Westrian Valdemar Oostingverde was walking
on air Sunday as he walked away with
the Arthorus Classic Championship title.
The Wynterwynd resident shot a sizzling
64 in the final round to become the first
Westrian to win an IGT event since its
inception.
Oostingverde finished at 18-under-par 266
and beat Whitlamite Jeff Orford, who
finally found his form, by two strokes
to claim the 450,000 Christiana Crowns
first prize.
"It was as difficult a day as I've had
to keep control of my emotions," said
Oostingverde, who accepted a Westrian
flag from an onlookeras he left the 18th
green. "I was getting choked up walking
to the 17th tee. Everybody dreams about
winning on the IGT, and this is such an
experience - especially since it also gets
me into the Golden Chalice Team. "
"I couldn't have asked to play any better
on the weekend," said Oostingverde, who
also shot 64 in the third round to move
from a tie for 24th to a tie for fourth
entering Sunday's action. "I've never
shot back-to-back 64s in my life -- much
less to win a tournament. It's one
of the best rounds I've ever had."
Oostingverde, who battled Orford and another
young Westrian hopeful, Oliver
Straswell for the lead most of the afternoon,
made his biggest play of the day on
the par-4 14th where his 8-iron approach
found the cup for eagle and moved him to
17 under. Oostingverde's eagle, coupled
with the first of what would turn out to
be back-to-back bogeys by Straswell, gave
him a two-shot advantage.
"I think it actually calmed me down," Oostingverde
said of the eagle, which had
followed a bogey on No. 13. "To get [a
stroke] back like that, it really calmed me
down and let me focus on my next tee shot."
With compatriot Straswell -- who would
finish in third at 14 under -- off his
heels, Oostingverde's lone remaining competition
was Orford. After Oostingverde
finished with a par on No. 18, Orford
smelled blood and made birdie on No. 17 to
pull to within a stroke.
But Orford, who has had to face a fair
share of criticism in the Whitlam press for
his so far disappointing form, proceeded
to knock his tee shot on the 18th into
the rough. As a result, he had to lay
up on his second shot and settle for bogey.
"I was a little bit upset because I fought
so hard on the back nine just to have
to concede on the last hole," said Orford,
"I played goodenough to win today and
so did Valdemar. I really thought
I would win this one though, but it was a boost
nevertheless after the way my season has
gone thus far".
Sharing fourth place were Graham Olejnik,
who once again surprised with a very
excellent performance, Christiana's Evan
Burchard, and the best of the locals,
Shaul Disbach. Generally, the Aros'
performances on their home soil has to be
classified as surprisingly disappointing,
as Disbach and season winner Patrick
Coulfax were considered top favorites,
and the other strong Aros to place strong.
Some of the other favorites did not do
too well either, including Rod Sinclair and
Matthias Rothies, Jr., who both missed
the cut.
The tournament also marked the debut on
the IGT of Grand Duke Mathew VI. of Lamb's
Cove, who is participating to raise money
for charities. Although the Grand Duke
missed the cut with a respectable 105.
place finish among 156 professional
entries, and as such earned no prize money
for his charity, his appearance alone
prompted spectators and sponsors to collect
charitable contributions exceeding
44,000 Christiana Crowns!
Only one tournament remains for players
to play their way onto the Golden Chalice
Teams - the Airwaves Aros Open, beginning
Thursday this week. Then, the only way
to get in will be through captain's selection.
