Baben Bay Classic

Baben, Baben Bay --- In absentia
of the biggest stars of the IGT, who were all playing in the Golden Chalice
Matches in Westria this week, some of the lesser known players had a chance
this week at the Lager & Fuselage Baben Bay Classic to show their stuff
and
cash in a big cheque.
After completing his third round at the
Baben Bay Classis with a share of second
place Saturday, Stanislaus Zoëk said
he felt at home amidst the rolling hills, oak
trees and plentiful saltwater fish cuisine.
Sunday he made Baben Bay his official
home away from home.
The Westrian used his putter to knock in
a 50-footer for birdie from the second
cut of rough to defeat Thobias Rothies
in a one-hole playoffand earn his first IGT
win.
"I was just looking to get the right speed
on it," Zoëk said of his finale. "When
it hit, it hit dead center on the pin."
After finishing the day tied at 18-under
270, the two golfers both missed the
fairway on the extra hole, with Rothies
just escaping a bunker. Rothies's second
shot wasn't as fortunate as it plugged
in a bunker some 90 feet from the pin. But
he would recover nicely by blasting out
to within 22 feet of the hole.
The day belonged to Zoëk, however,
as his second shot came to rest in the second
cut of rough to the back and left of the
pin. He needed to get it close to force
Rothies to make his lengthy par putt and
extend the playoff to another hole, but
the ball didn't stop until it landed safely
in the cup. As it fell, Zoëk took a
huge leap upward in celebration.
"There's nothing else to do," Zoëk
said of his reaction. "I said, 'What the heck,
I have to do something.' "Of course
I would rather win a tournament where all the
top players are present, but, hey, a win
is a win, and just look at the names that
were in this field nevertheless... I am
very pleased! Too bad for those guys,
having to play for free, while I am cashing
a cheque for $360,000, eh?", he was
joking.
The playoff was made possible when Rothies,
who led much of the day coming down
the stretch, made bogey on No. 17 to fall
back to 18 under and into a tie with
Zoëk, who had birdied No. 14 to move
to 18 under.
Claiming third place Sunday was another
Westrian, Distelbluth, who posted a 67 to
finish at 17 under. One additional stroke
back in sole possession of fourth place
yet another compatriot, Juligartian, to
complete the Westrian triumph.
"It's a great day for Westria", said Rothies,
"with our boys rallying back to win
the Golden Chalice, and us here dominating
in Baben Bay - what more can you ask
for? Of course I would have preferred
to either be on the team myself, or to win
here, but overall I am still a happy man
today!"
