Surina, Westermarc -- Altlandic surprise man
Helyimar Gortsidler won the IGT
Inaugural presented by Woollee today on
the fifth hole of a sudden death playoff!
A dramatic run of sudden death came to
an end on the fifth playoff hole, the par-4
16th, where Gortsidler drained a five-foot
birdie putt after an impressive
approach from the left rough.
The biggest drama during the playoff
came minutes earlier at the same hole. On
the pair's first trip to No. 16, the second
sudden-death hole, Gortsidler knocked
his second shot into the front bunker
and playoff opponent and local favorite
Subhas Sunilam gave himself a 12-footer.
Gortsidler holed out from the sand for
birdie and put the pressure squarely on
Sunilam, who answered by draining his
birdie putt.
Gortsidler knocked a wedge within four
feet at the 72nd hole and hit the birdie
putt to force sudden death. The
Altlander's flair for the dramatic earned him the
first official IGT paycheck with the $360,000
first prize.
Sunilam may have been at a slight disadvantage
in the playoff. After
parring the final hole of regulation,
he lost caddie Freddie Sung to heat
exhaustion. Taking Sung's place was 15-year-old
Kyle Hou, the son of tournament
director Kim Hou.
After both players parred the 17th
in sudden death, Sunilam turned the tables and
applied the pressure by nailing a 15-foot
birdie putt at No. 18. Gortsidler had
the answer this time, sinking a 10-footer
to extend the playoff.
Sunilam ripped his drive nearly 300
yards down the fairway at No. 16 -- the fifth
sudden-death hole -- but pulled his approach
25 feet left of the flag. He failed
to convert his birdie try shortly after
Gortsidler bounced his second shot five
feet past the cup.
Both playoff competitors fired 5-under-par
65s today to finish with 72-hole
totals of 19-under 261, three strokes
better than third-round leader, Caboteniasan
underdog Ernesto Gnorelia, who could not
hold his lead, and Deuco Mario Saby.
Gnorelia entered the day with a three-shot
lead but bogeyed No. 1 and watched
Gortsidler birdie the hole as his advantage
quickly dropped to one stroke. He fell
from the top spot when Sunilam birdied
the sixth and seventh holes, then fell out
of contention when a horrid drive led
to a bogey at the par-4 14th. He can
console himself with a check for 116,000
Christiana Crowns! Pre-tournament
favorites Leopard Birch and Shaul Disbach
charged hard in the final round, but
came up 4 shots short in fifth, together
with Whitlamite Mark Salvatori.
Final scores and earnings Sunday of the
CH$2 million IGT Inaugural, presented by
Woollee, played
on the 6,762-yard, par-70 Bayview Golf
& Yachting Club course:
