BRISTOL, LAMB'S COVE ---- In a welcome
return to form, San Patrician
star Pancho McFeeley shot a 6-under-par
64 Sunday to win the Cove Air
Bristol Classic by five strokes and claim
his second victory this year.
Entering the final round with a two-stroke
lead over surprising
Bowdanian Marcus Weilderman, McFeeley
had seven birdies against one
bogey to finish with a 19-under total
of 261.
McFeeley, who had been under scrutiny due
to his recent slump in form,
which saw him fall outside the top-ten
of the Order of Merit, and even
outside the automatic qualification ranks
for the international Golden
Chalice team, responded in style to his
critics, and won the Bristol
Classic in style, with 5 shots to spare.
"This is the Pancho of old",
the charismatic San Patrician said about
his win, "it's been a difficult
stretch, but I knew all along that I was
going to rise back to the top
again. I knew I would win more tournaments
this year, and I will win
even more!"
Weilderman, a rookie who has not placed
in the top ten of any tournament
before, kept pace with McFeeley for most
the round with five birdies,
but couldn't close the gap. Pancho
birdied No. 18 while Weilderman
faltered with his only bogey of the day.
McFeeley started the round at 13-under
and was 15-under after nine holes
with birdies on Nos. 2, 5 and 8. Weilderman
tried to challenge, and kept
it close with birdies on Nos. 4, 8, 11
and 12, but McFeeley maintained
the lead by playing the back nine 4-under.
After he rolled in his final birdie, prompting
a shout of ``Pancho
Galore!'' from the gallery, McFeeley pumped
his fist in the air as a
Paxton Air Ship was hovering above the
18th green, raining confetti onto
the victor.
Ordland's Michael Bobone and Draconian
journeyman Saul Pishenky tied for
third at 269, for both their best ever
placement on the IGT.
Bobone, who shot a 64 in the third round
to jump from 23rd place to
fourth, shot a final-round 68.
Pishenky began the day in third place at
10-under, but struggled,
hitting a double-bogey on the par-4 fifth
hole and two more bogeys
against five birdies. He held on for third
place, however.
The victory puts McFeeley not only back
well within the automatic
qualifier ranks for the Chalice Cup, but
also keeps him with an outside
chance of challenging Westrian money leader
Matthias Rothies, Jr., for
the Order of Merit title. These
two golfers are the only two multiple
winners on the IGT this year. McFeeley
also won the inaugural
tournament of the season, the Vexaco Deucoland
Open in April. Rothies
won the Kukurian Koffee Open, as well
as the IGT Grand Championship.
Another San Pat star, Jose Maria de los
Angeles McGurk, contributed to
an overall excellent result for the Melanian
nation by placing 5th alone
to earn over CC100,000.
