300 Air Christa Open

----- It was a battle of the rookies today,
with Namurian Rugro Bilau and Davenportian
Philippe Larocquette each
going for their debut win on the IGT,
with the bigger names failing to
make much impact on the leader board.
It was Bilau in the end winning
in a sudden death playoff, tapping in
a 2-foot par putt to beat
Larocquette on the first extra hole.
It was the first ever victory for
a Namurian on the IGT.
It was also the best result of a Davenportian
on Tour, and "La Rocket"'s
latest step towards greatness on the international
golf stage after a
very distinguished amateur career.
Bilau and Larocquette finished regulation
at 14-under 274 and went back
to the par-4 18th to begin the playoff.
Larocquette made things tough on
himself right away, putting his tee shot
into a bunker on the right side
of the fairway.
With a cluster of trees blocking his way
to the hole, Larocquette played
it safe and punched out to the fairway.
But with Bilau on the green in
two, Larocquette needed to put his next
shot close to the pin. Instead,
it hit the green and rolled off, finally
stopping in the rough about 18
feet from the hole.
Bilau missed an 18-foot birdie putt but
tapped in for par, forcing
Larocquette to hole his chip shot to force
a second playoff hole. The
Davenportian came a few inches shy, but
his ball rolled right on by to
make Bilau the champion.
Altland's Palo Pescitel, Kalesthesia's
Telton Seruca, and Meritean
Reynhold Jarvie tied for third at 12-under
276. Quincy Holland, the
favorite Charistianan, still looking for
his form from last season, once
again never got his putter going and finished
seven strokes back at
7-under 281.
''I just didn't make any putts. When that
happens, you're not going to
go very low,'' he said. ''Overall, I hit
the ball beautifully, hit a lot
of good, solid shots, held the ball in
the wind. I drove it great this
week. I just didn't make any of those
10- or 15-footers to get the
momentum going.'' The putter had
been slowing Holland down since the
beginning of the season. Holland's
performance was in line with an
overall shockingly bad showing by the
local Christianans in their first
official IGT event played on the island.
Top-ranked Evan Burchard
actually failed to even make the cut!
Bilau appeared to have the title wrapped
up with a birdie on the par-5
15th that moved him to 16 under, two strokes
ahead of Larocquette. But
the Namurian duffed a chip shot just off
the green on the next hole,
hitting the lip of a bunker. The ball
dropped into the bunker, and Bilau
settled for par.
After Larocquette missed birdie putts on
16 and 17, all Bilau had to do
was par the 18th - something he'd done
the first three days - for a
victory. But it wasn't that easy.
His second shot landed on the back-right
side of the green, uphill from
the pin that was tucked in the bottom-left
corner. Hit it too hard, and
the ball would roll right into the water.
Hit it too soft, and it would
stop.
Using an iron, Bilau gently tapped the
ball. The ball picked up speed as
it rolled and got within an inch of the
cup, coming so close its shadow
covered the cup. But it kept going, rolling
about 10 feet past the hole
as Bilau bent his head.
He still had a chance for par, but his
putt curled away from the hole
and missed by about a foot.
Playing in the group behind Bilau, Larocquette
knew he could win with a
birdie. But he sent his drive screaming
off to the left side and then
sent his second shot dribbling off the
green and down into the sloping
rough. It looked as if it might roll all
the way into the water, but it
hung up in the apron off the green.
Larocquette chipped to 2 feet away, and
had to settle for par and the
playoff, where Bilau was to prevail.
"I am so happy to win, especially here
in the home of golf,
Christiana... I don't believe that my
win will make too many waves back
home, soccer is simply everything in Namuria,
but perhaps this can draw
my country's attention to the fact that
golf is a great game as well,
and maybe help further its popularity.
Anyways, I am very happy!"
Laroquette was a gracious loser: "I got
myself in trouble, and basically
screwed up in the playoff... too bad.
But congrats to Rugro, he sure
held on tough. Second is not bad
either. Now I know I can win out
here, and I will sooner or later."
Bilau's $540,000 christiana crowns winners
cheque now puts him firmly in
the lead in the rookie of the year standings.
