300 Id'S-Oylof Feniz Open
Phoenix Golf Club, Fenizabad,
Feniz
FENIZABAD, FENIZ --- Christiana's
Evan Burchard asked for one last chance and
then made the best of it Sunday as he
defeated the unknown Rosardannach Johnnie
McKey on the second playoff hole to successfully
defend his title at the $3.4
million Christiana Crowns Id'S-Oylof Feniz
Open in Phoenix Town.
As McKey stood over a 4-foot putt on the
first playoff hole, Burchard figured his
chances for a win had come to an end.
"I thought, 'Give me one more chance,'"
the Christianan said. "I guess there was
too much pressure on him, not being used
to playing in the spotlight and under
pressure like that." McKey had never placed
even close to the top-10 before in an
IGT event, and it was his biggest ever
putt, with him making it meaning a
sensational victory...
But moments later, Burchard's wish was
answered.
McKey, overcome by the pressure, missed
the putt, and Burchard went on to win his
first IGT event with a par on the second
hole of sudden death.
Each shot final-round 68s to fend off challenges
from Altland's Nels Kepparketl
(68-271), Meritean Asa Harrison (64-272)
and his compatiot, Dustin Yurhaus
(68-272).
Burchard and McKey finished at 18-under
270.
Burchard, who is the second Christianan
after Quincy Holland to win on the IGT,
earned $612,000.
McKey, Rosardan's golfing pride and joy,
and only one of two Rosardannach to play
on the IGT, bogeyed the 72nd hole to fall
into a tie with Burchard, then did it
again on the first playoff hole before
suffering through a disastrous series of
shots on the second hole of sudden death.
Johnnie McKey settled for the $367,200
second-prize check, still by far his
biggest ever pay day.
"You work your butt off to win golf tournaments,
and I had a chance today," McKey
said. "I played some good golf today and
it's disappointing for it to end like I
did. It felt like I bled all over the
place out there but I had my chance on the
first playoff hole.
"It was the first time I really had a shot
at winning, and the old nerves were
going a little bit," he added. "I'll be
the first to admit, I choked it and missed
it."
Burchard acknowledged that he had not played
his best. "I'm very lucky to win. I
can't believe it. At times out there today,
I say, 'Evan, what are you doing? Are
you playing golf or are you playing soccer?'"
Burchard saved par with a 7-footer on the
72nd hole and sank another 7-footer on
the first sudden-death hole to salvage
a bogey and stay alive again.
On the second playoff hole, McKey went
from fairway bunker to greenside bunker.
His next shot rolled up and down the fringe
back into the same bunker. His fourth
sailed over the pin and his fifth slipped
three feet past the cup.
Burchard meanwhile got up onto the green
from the same greenside bunker as McKey
and two-putted for the victory.
"I never give up," said Burchard. "I always
give a good fight. This is sweet for
me, sweet for my country and sweet for
my sponsor. People around Vexillium may
remember me now."
McKey tried to stay positive.
"I had my chance," he said. "My wife is
still going to love me tomorrow and
tonight, and I'm going to go on with my
life. But you know what? I'm going to win
one here soon. I'm getting closer."
Excellent and surprising showing also by
local Fenizian challenger Gudd Aga
Bin'Weri, who took maximum advantage of
his knowledge of the course, and cashed a
cool cheque for CC113,900... who would
have thought!
