300 OPEN OF THE REALM
Southern Palisades Country
Club, Suthre, Solanchatka
SUTHRE, SOLANCHATKA -----
James Nithz made his dream come true yesterday and lived
up to lofty expectations that have awaited
the Oost-Otagan golfer from the first
day of the IGT's inception.
Nithz, dubbed my many as the "best player
yet to win on the IGT" finally made
good, not only by winning his first IGT
tournament, but doing it in style, winning
the second major tournament of the year...
and every Realmer's top aspiration, the
Open of the Realm.
Nithz seemed like a shoe-in for the title,
leading by an unheard of 10 shots after
the third round, but he made things interesting,
shooting a shaky 77 in the final
round... but he managed to hold on and
finish the job, despite some nerveous
jitters, winning by an impressive 5 shots
over the field, headed up by Westrian
Matthias Rothies, Jr., who never really
could mount a serious charge, and
Deyoank's Finschammel Von Toschamerton,
who readily stepped into the international
spotlight, tieing Rothies for second place,
giving him his biggest pay cheque yet,
and putting him in serious contention
for the Rookie of the Year title.
Following in fourth is Subhas Sunilam,
of Chakrazipang, who finally reached some
form. Guillaume Ouesreche, a two-time
IGT winner, and Davenportian rookie
sensation John Cates followed at 5-over.
Scores were high, as usual at the Realm
Open, with the course set up tight
(fairways in place only 20 yards wide),
and 3-inch rough. As the week progressed,
the greens dried out as well, reading
a blistering 12.6 on the stimpmeter.
"It got real tough after the first round",
Nithz said, "the greens were drying
out, and for a moment today, after my
double-bogey on 12, I thought I was going to
lose it... but then I calmed myself down,
seeing I still had a 4-shot lead, and I
made it safely in with another birdie
to win by 5!"
"To win the Open of the Realm is too perfect.
I was struggling to finally pull
off my first win as it is, and I could
smell it coming closer - to make it the
Open, is just tremendous."
Runner-up Rothies said: "To go into the
last round trailing James by ten was
almost insurmountable. We knew we
had to go low, which is real tough on this
course... none of us (the field) really
stepped up to challenge. He (Nithz) could
have been cought today, if we had put
more pressure on him, as he was making a few
bogeys and that double on 12... but we
never got closer than 4 shots, and he found
his nerves, eventually."
Von Toschamerton was bubbly after his second
place finish:"This is fantastic!
Fantastic! I am so delighted...
I almost feel like I won it... fantastic!"
Nithz takes the major trophy and the whopping
$800,000 Christiana Crowns first
prize money - what a performance!
