301 Badger Bowl International
Golf Mastership
Dillish
Avonshire Golf Grounds, Dillish, Northern Avonshire, Somery
DILLISH, SOMERY -- Em SHONAUGH
put last week's Open of the Realm playoff
loss behind him, shooting a 2-under-par
68 Sunday, for a one-stroke
victory over Dustin YURHAUS in the Badger
Bowl International Golf
Mastership in front of his enthusiastic
home crowds.
Booming long drives and staying out of
trouble most of the day, Shonaugh
finished at 16-under 264. He earned $558,000
Christiana Crowns for his
first ever IGT win, and the first for
a Somerish player - fittingly in
the first ever IGT event played in Somery.
Shonaugh began the round with a one-stroke
lead over Robert MATTHEWMAN,
after shooting a 61 on Saturday -- setting
the course record.
Shonaugh didn't touch a club this week
after a disappointing playoff
loss against Amea ARETASUNA at the Open
of the Realm one week ago,
skipping the practice rounds on the course
he knows so well anyways, and
choosing to practice visualization techniques
instead.
"Changing my mental approach and my outlook
heading into the round as
well as during the round, has allowed
me to perform at a
higher lever -- to perform at my best,"
Emerill said. "I feel if I can
start to work on that and refine that
and get better at it, I should be
able to close more on the opportunities
that I have been giving myself.
Of course playing a course I must have
played over a hundred times
helped too!"
On this Sunday, he parred the final three
holes after dropping a stroke
on the 15th, his lone bogey of the weekend.
After his drive bounced into the brush
on the left side of the green on
No. 15, he chipped to about 20 feet and
two-putted.
On the difficult 17th, with trees lining
the entire right side, he
nearly holed his approach shot, but the
ball spun off the front of the
green. He chipped to a foot to save par.
"I think that the critical shots were on
16 and 17 where there was a lot
of trouble and it was windy," Shonaugh
said. "On 17, I expected it to
fly it about 4, 5 yards behind the hole,
then come back. It wasn't a
hard chip on 17, but that took away a
good birdie opportunity."
Yurhaus, taking advantage of his own familiarity
with the layout, which
he had also played often before, shot
a 66. Evan BURCHARD (63), Quincy
HOLLAND (68), and Matthewman (69) tied
for third, two strokes back.
Michael DuBRAAL (65) was sixth at 13 under.
Shonaugh birdied Nos. 3, 6 and 7 to reach
17 under. He made a 15-foot
birdie putt on No. 3, and holed a 6-footer
on the 574-yard, par-5 sixth
after reaching the front left bunker in
two shots. He hit a 335-yard
drive on No. 7, and put a wedge shot within
4 feet to set up his final
birdie.
Yurhaus closed with a 25-foot birdie on
No. 18 after sliding a 12-footer
by on No. 17.
"I'm a little disappointed that I didn't
get the job accomplished in
winning here," Dustin said. "Usually most
people don't remember who
finishes second. But I am really
geared up for the Albion-Merite
Imperial Open next week!"
The Badger Bowl International Golf Mastership
is the biggest golf
tournament in Somery and so far the only
one allowing foreign players.
It's played at the Dillish Avonshire Golf
Grounds in northwestern Nether
Avonshire, just outside the hundred seat
of Dillish. The course is
beautifully situated around Lake Shewyn,
merging in a natural way into
the environment.
For the first time part of the official
IGT schedule, the Badger Bowl
proved a full success, especially for
the local crowds, who turned out
in record numbers, and were not disappointed
as their native son came
away the champion. The other Somerish
players also did very well, with
Rosebridge and Coswyn also placing in
the top-10, and Queal just
outside.
The win puts Shonaugh way ahead in the
Rookie of the Year standings,
where he already got a big boost from
his runner-up finish last week at
the Open of the Realm. He will be
tough to beat for that honor, it
seems!
