301 ChenTV IGT Masters
Bayview Golf & Yachting
Club, Surina, Westermarc
SURINA, WESTERMARC ----- As expected, Rod
SINCLAIR cruised to a seven-stroke
triumph Sunday at the ChenTV IGT Masters.
Solidly in the lead after the third round,
Sinclair fired a 6-under-par 65 at the
Bayview Golf and Yachting Club for a 72-hole
total of 19-under 265.
The Whitlamite thus easily outdistanced
local favorite "Dragon" TAY, who outdueled
a handful of golfers to finish second
at 12-under 272.
Sinclair put together four rounds in the
60s: "It's something you think about for
a long time. The times I thought about
today were the times I practiced when I
didn't want to. You practice all those
hours for a moment just like this. ... It's
the strangest, neatest feeling.
I am very pleased to shoot in the sixties every
day and to win so soon after my last one!"
"There isn't a thing I can think of that
can make this any better," he said.
Subhas SUNILAM and rookie Jaquese MANDRIN
tied for third at 11-under 273, one shot
better than Jeffrey HOVANEC, Pancho McFEELEY
and Vance CHOEK.
Sinclair had a two-shot lead after Saturday's
68, which turned out to be his worst
round of the week. He played the first
six holes Sunday at even-par but began a
torrid finish with a four-foot birdie
putt at the seventh hole.
"When I made bogey on No. 4, it kind of
calmed me down," he said. "I felt like I
had nothing to lose. ... I thought about
last night, what I'd say if I shot 80 and
I thought about what I'd say if I shot
65."
He bore down on the latter figure with
birdies at Nos. 8, 12, 13, 14 and 15 --
none outside 15 feet.
"I was playing solid. The worst thing I
could do was try and maneuver shots,"
Sinclair said. "I tried to be aggressive
on 16, I didn't want to chicken out. I
asked my caddie what kind of lead I had
and he just laughed."
The hiccup at the 16th hole merely delayed
the inevitable. Sinclair bounced back
with a flourish at the final hole, leaving
his approach two feet from the cup to
set up his eighth birdie of the day.
"I kept saying to myself, `Let's get one
more just in case you goof up,'" Sinclair
said.
He didn't, leaving the rest of the field
to battle for second place.
"I could have easily packed it in and said
it's over, but I hung in there," Tay
said. "My goals have changed a little
for me. Now it's to win another tournament.
Too bad I didn't have a real shot at this
one today, Rod was just unstoppable!"
