301 Satosan Westermarc Open
The Grounds, Choonsocky (Kikikira),
Westermarc
CHOONSOCKY, WESTERMARC ----- Michael DuBRAAL
came up with two big putts to offset
a few scary moments and won the Satosan
Westermarc Open Sunday for his second
victory of the year.
It couldn't have come at a better time.
``Obviously, I'm playing OK,'' said DuBraal,
who closed with a 3-under 67 and won
by three strokes over Lennie SHIGETSUKI
and Sisophone THRUSA, III. ``I have been
thinking about making the Golden Chalice
team, and really wanted to make it, and
this win will help a lot, I think.
``If I play like this at the Golden Chalice,
then I'll be happy. Now, it looks
like I have a great chance to be there.''
DuBraal holed a 30-foot putt for birdie
on No. 15 to build a three-stroke lead,
then made another difficult birdie putt
from 20 feet on the 17th to restore the
margin.
That offset a sloppy double bogey on 16
that gave Shigetsuki fleeting hope, and a
drive on the 18th hole at The Grounds
that stopped rolling some 60 yards right of
the fairway. None of it mattered, especially
when DuBraal saved his closing par
with a 25-foot putt.
DuBraal finished at 266.
Vance CHOEK had a chance to win, especially
after nearly driving four par-4s on
the front nine. He was tied for the lead
after going out in 30, but wound up four
strokes behind.
No one else could sustain a run, either.
``Sometimes, you're meant to win,'' DuBraal
said.
It was the third victory of a career that
is increasingly putting the Zartanian
player into the spotlight as one of the
game's very top players. His other two
wins came at last year's Zartlam Open
and at this year's Vexaco Deucoland Open.
These wins came after several months of
struggle when he first joined the
professional ranks.
``There have been all kinds of ups and
mainly downs,'' he said. ``That was a
thrill to win again this year. This year
is more of a relief. I feel like I
really belong now.''
DuBraal earned $648,000. He started the
final round with a one-stroke lead and was
caught twice, but never trailed.
Shigetsuki, looking for his first win,
got within one stroke of the lead after
DuBraal's double bogey, but he shoved
his drive right on the closing hole and lost
whatever hope he had with a bogey.
``I missed a lot of putts that could have
made a difference, but I just missed too
many fairways and too many greens,'' the
Westermarcian said.
Thrusa, the Ansonian rookie, felt like
a winner when he was done. A tie for second
earned him $334,200, by far hsi biggest
pay day ever. He didn't even realize that
his 269 might be good enough for a playoff.
``I just wanted to have a good finish and
earn some cash, and I did,'' Thrusa
said.
Sedg COSWYN was within one shot of the
lead after 10 holes, but played the rest of
the way 1-over and wound up at 271, tied
for fifth with Guillaume OUESRECHE and
Gary MITSUCHEN.
No one charged up the gallery quite like
long-hitting Choek. He simply overpowered
the course with his driver, keeping it
in play and only making bogey when he hit
iron off the tee.
His drive landed just short of the green
on the 377-yard 2nd and rolled into the
bunker. He had a 341-yard drive on No.
8 -- into a stiff breeze -- and his pitch
rolled over the cup, leaving him a 12-foot
birdie. He joined the leaders by
chipping in for birdie from 20 feet on
No. 9, walking after the ball as soon as it
left his club and thrusting his fist at
the hole as it dropped.
He was slowed by two bogeys and finished
at 66.
``I knew I had to go at the flags because
Mike wasn't going to fold,'' said Choek.
Another local favorite, Ryan SOTOGUNE never
got anything going, especially after a
bogey on the opening hole. He finished
with a birdie for a 1-under 69 and finished
in a tie for 23rd. ``I never really did
get on any kind of a roll,'' Sotogune
said.
