Defending champions Team Whitlam - Rod SINCLAIR and Jeff ORFORD started slowly but
made the four-team playoff with a finish that included three straight birdies from
the 15th and an eagle on the par-5 18th for a 5-under 67. 

Sitting two shots back of Draconia, Ansonia and Davenport, it didn't look good for
the Whitlamites when Orford's approach shot on 18 landed in the rough to the right
of the green. 

Sinclair then made the shot of the day with a chip from 10 feet off the green that
bounced on the top of a hill and rolled in for eagle to give the Whitlamites a
24-under 264 and a place in the playoff. 

``We really didn't play all that well today until the very end when we got on a
little run to get into the playoff,'' said Sinclair. 

Like the Whitlamites, Cates and Larocquette also needed an eagle on the 18th, and
Larocquette atoned for a missed par putt on 17 with an approach from the middle of
the fairway that landed 8 feet from the hole. Cates then made the eagle putt and
the Davenportians were in the playoff after a 6-under 66. 

``We saw that Draconia made birdie on 18 and knew we needed an eagle,'' said
Cates. ``Philippe hit a beautiful 5-iron and I was able to make the putt to get us
into the playoff.'' 

Team Davenport won $1 million Christiana Crowns from the $3 million purse. 

Ansonia's Jeffrey HOVANEC and Sisophone THRUSA, III., had a three-stroke lead
heading into the final round and a chance to win it outright on 18. But they could
only manage par after Hovanec's approach sailed over the green and Thrusa was
forced to chip on from the rough. Hovanec missed the 7-foot birdie putt and
Ansonia finished with a 70. 

Draconia's Thaddeus LUBJANA and Frank PHARINSER shot a 7-under 65 that included
seven birdies. 

On the first playoff hole, No. 18, Sinclair's drive found the rough on the right
side of the fairway and Orford had no choice but to chip out of the trees to give
his partner a clear shot at the green. 

Sinclair's approach landed on the green well to the left of the hole and Orford
left a 20-foot birdie putt just short to knock the Whitlam team out. 

Ansonia also was eliminated on the first playoff hole when Hovanec missed a
10-foot birdie putt. 

On the second playoff hole, No. 14, Lubjana drove into the trees on the right
while Larocquette split the fairway with a solid drive before Cates' approach
landed 15 feet from the hole. Larocquette missed the birdie putt by 6 inches but
Cates tapped in for par, then watched as Pharinser missed a 7-foot par putt. 

``In a way it was lucky that two teams dropped out after the first playoff,'' said
Larocquette. ``I hit a good drive and Johnnie made a nice approach and we managed
to win it.''
