302 Omichron Gentlemen's
Club Classic
The Gentlemen's Club, Portescuro,
Caboteniasa
PORTESCURO, CABOTENIASA ---
Peter KILET wasn't a bit surprised to win his first
tournament on the IGT.
Well-rested, stronger after working with weights,
and even sharper with his short
game, Kilet birdied the final three holes
of regulation, then nailed his wedge
shot from 80 yards within inches of the pin
on the first playoff hole to win the
Omichron Gentlemen's Club Classic on Sunday.
``I knew this year was going to be when I
score my first win. I got close last
year, and really rededicated myself during
the off-season and trained even harder,
and I knew it would be a matter of time -
turns out, shorter rather than longer!''
Kilet said after beating surprising rookie
Asbjorn BLAVIK after Blavik hit into
the water on the first extra hole.
On the way to a $720,000 payday, Kilet closed
with an 8-under 64 to finish the
five-day event at 30 under. Blavik, looking
for his first win in just his second
ever IGT tournament, shot a 66. He birdied
two of the last three holes of
regulation to force the playoff.
``I'm pleased that I shot 8 under and very
pleased to have won,'' Kilet said of
his win.
The Bowdanian capped his 64 with a brilliant
flop shot that set up his birdie on
No. 18.
``It was a good shot, yeah,'' he said of the
shot out of a difficult lie on the
fringe that left him a short birdie putt.
Blavik's muffed 4-iron on the first playoff
hole cost him.
After hitting his tee shot into the middle
of the fairway on the extra hole, No.
18 on the Gentlemen's Club Course, Blavik
left the blade of his club slightly open
and hit into the water in front of the green.
He pitched within 8 feet of the pin and had
a good shot at salvaging par, but
Kilet clinched it with his right-on-the-money
wedge and tap-in.
Kilet said his goal during his time off was
to improve his short game.
``I felt like I became more consistent from
130 (yards) in, and more efficient.
That's why I'm excited to have won the tournament,
because what I've specifically
worked on paid off,'' said Kilet, who already
had one of the best short games on
the tour.
After he hit onto the 18th green, Blavik almost
sensed what was coming next from
Kilet, 80 yards away.
``You can't count Peter out because of his
short game, and he knew exactly what he
was doing and he did it. He's a great player,
obviously, and he showed it right
there,'' Blavik said.
Talking about his costly second shot in the
playoff, the young Vinn attributed it
to his inexperience, and said, ``I was trying
to hit a hard cut on the right
portion of the green and I just chunked it.
Yeah, it's a bit disappointing, I was
very nervous when I played the shot, and
should have probably backed off, but if
you had told me before the tournament that
I was going to be second I would have
been ecstatic. I am still just trying
to figure out what's going on out here on
Tour as a young rookie. So, no matter
what, I have every reason to be happy with
my week here. And Z 432,000 in prize
money is just awesome!!''
Estontetsan Asservado nusKORNS and Whitlam's
Ray BARTRIM tied for third at 28
under. Aliende DAHLISTA was the best of the
Caboteniasans, fifth at 27 under.
Long time tournament leader Telton SERUCA
(Kalesthesia) had a 74 to finish six
strokes back at 336.
Kilet took the lead for first time on the
89th hole of the tournament, when he
rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 17
to go to 7 under for the day and 29
under for the tournament.
Blavik's 66 included an eagle at No. 11 that
started him on his way to a 31 on the
last nine holes of regulation. The second-place
finish is a great boost to his
young career, putting him in the lead in
the Rookie of the Year Standings!
Other notables:
Two-time IGT winner Lance CHRIPONSI, donning
his new Porto Capital citizenship,
finished tied for 6th with 301 Order of Merit
Champion David HAVRILLAK and five
others, including local hero Paulo SENADURO,
at 26-under. Whitlam's Steve RAFFLES
was second-best rookie after having led the
tournament briefly in the early final
round. Nathan SORUSNE continued his
successful comeback with another cut made,
finishing solidly at 17-under.
