302 Lilimea Lendosan Open
Lendian National G.C., Gloria Libertatis, Lendosan Confederation

GLORIA LIBERTATIS, LENDOSA -- Larry TAHOMA sat in a high-back chair
with a purple-and-white lei draped around his neck and a victory smile
that was a long time coming.

The Lilimea Lendosan Open was Tahoma's second IGT victory, but his
first since the 300 Aurora Open, and it had not been a secret that the
popular Christianan was trying hard to prove that not only could he win
again, but also that he could win outside Christiana!

No wonder he got a little nervous Sunday when he found Altland's Renato
D'AMOR hot on his heels down the backstretch at the Lendian National
Golf Club.

``I just didn't want it to slip away at the last moment,'' Tahoma said.
``I wasn't going to do the things that let someone else win. I wanted
to win the tournament.''

He took care of that with two flawless swings when the pressure peaked.

Needing a birdie on the closing hole to win, Tahoma split the middle of
the fairway with a 3-wood, then hit the ball about 45 feet above the
hole. He lagged his eagle putt to 12 inches and tapped in for his
victory.

``I'm really happy with how my swing reacted,'' said Tahoma. ``You put
in years of hard work and it comes down to those two shots right
there.''

He closed with an even-par 70 and finished at 266 for a one-stroke
victory over D'Amor, who was done in by a cell phone that rang when he
was at the top of his swing on the 17th.

``I didn't think I would have been that upset about finishing second,
but this was pretty bittersweet,'' D'Amor said.

Tahoma didn't think even par would be enough, not with so many players
within range.

They all had their problems.

Davenport's Philippe LAROCQUETTE, playing in the final group, caught
Tahoma at 13 under through five holes, only to give it back on the next
hole by hitting his tee shot into the bushes. It was too risky to take
a penalty stroke, so Larocquette went back to the tee and made double
bogey.

He never challenged again and finished with a 72, four strokes behind.

Surprising Allacoan Ibn BOULABI had the best score of the round -- a
5-under 65 -- but he started too far back and watched Tahoma play the
back nine on television from the Club House lounge.

Jager UUNDERFVIL had an even-par 70 despite making only four pars. He
finished in a tie for fourth at 270, along with Larocquette and Evert
KRONBERG (67).

Em SHONAUGH was within two strokes of the lead at the turn, but
couldn't get a putt to fall and made two bogeys on the back nine to
fall out of sight.

That left D'Amor to challenge, and Tahoma to hang on.

Clinging to a one-stroke lead, Tahoma found the bunker off the 14th tee
and had to made a 5-foot putt to save par. One hole later, a poor chip
from the collar of the green left him a 12-footer for par, and that
found the center of the cup, too.

``A lifetime of putts,'' Tahoma said.

For D'Amor, it all fell apart on the 17th. With a 5-iron in his hand,
he got to the top of his swing when a cell phone went off. D'Amor's tee
shot sailed right toward a deep bunker, and he screamed in frustration
before it landed.

``No! No cell phones!''

No matter how many signs are posted banning cell phones, there's always
someone in the crowd.

This was a man in his late teens, early 20s. The last D'Amor saw he was
being escorted off by tournament security.

``I'm sure the kid feels bad,'' D'Amor said. ``Lucky the ropes stopped
me because I was going (after him). I would've felt worse now if I done
what I wanted to.''

Tahoma watched D'Amor miss his 6-foot to make bogey, then did the same.
Tahoma hit 7-iron to about 80 feet and three-putted. The one-stroke
lead was gone when D'Amor reached the 18th green with his second shot
and two-putted for birdie.

``I made Larry earn it,'' D'Amor said. ``And he did.''

Tahoma won Z720,000 for his first victory, which assures him a trip to
next year's Tournament of CHampions.

``I've wanted this for a long time,'' Tahoma said.

The other MAJOR story for this week was the triumphant return of
longtime imprisoned Zartanian golfer Nathan SORUSNE.  Sorusne was
jailed by the Eastern Zartanian government for having violated travel
restrictions, after he played a tournament in Aros during the 300
season.  Sorusne was finally released from prison last December, and
after spending time with his family, he once again decided to pick up
his golf clubs and train to rejoin the IGT.  The Lendosan Open was his
first tournament back, and considering the circumstances, he did very
well, making the cut and finishing a very respectable 2-under par for
the week, making over Z11,000 in earnings!  Sorusne now plays for
Western Zartania, by the way.

Sorusne received a great outpouring of support from the fans this week,
and was probably the most sought-after signer of autographs, and also
showered by total strangers with small gifts and flowers with a
"Welcome back!" message.  He was duly missed on Tour, as his case
gained worldwide notariety during his sentence.  Many think that it was
the international pressure from various humanitarian organizations
which finally moved the Eastern Zartanian government to release him.
Whatever the reason, we on the IGT are glad to see him return!

Also notable the good debuts from several of many rookies this week,
led by Westrian Ives VanELVIS at 9-under, followed by Moranian BRESCHA
one shot back, Vingarmark's Mattiesko MATIKAINEN another shot back, and
deDRUUIDT and CHYR, yet another shot behind.  No less than 12
additional rookies managed to make the cut in their first ever IGT
event - should make for a great season and a tight race for Rookie of
the Year!
