302 Joshua Veitz Vexillium
Matchplay Championship

BA SUTRACCA, LOMBRIGA ---
The Joshua Veitz Vexillium Match Play Championship was
definitely not your grandfather's match
play.
Emerging in the single-elimination format
from a field of the top 64 qualified
players in the special composite ranking
used (consisting of 1/2 the 301 Season
earnings and all the 302 Season earnings)
was No. 62 J. T. LAMAR, who defeated No.
45 Graham OLEJNIK 1-up in a 36-hole final
at the Grand Sutracca Resort on Sunday.
Lamar's surprise victory was a fitting
end to this event because it started with
first-round losses by top seeds David
HAVRILLAK, John CATES, and Amea ARETASUNA.
"Match play is not what it was 50 years
ago," said IGT Commissioner Matthias
ROTHIES, Sr. in explaining the chain of
upsets throughout the week. "Back then out
of 100 players you could probably pick
five or six who would be better than the
others.
"Today the difference in No. 1 and No.
100 is smaller, and that difference is best
measured over time."
Lamar and Olejnik provided an entertaining
match of two underdogs battling for a
Million RealmsZaster, and their biggest
(and in Lamar's case: first) victory on
the IGT.
The champion, who banked the Z 1 million
for the win, hit only 10 fairways in
regulation in the final 36 but closed
out Olejnik by sticking a bunker shot to
within inches of the hole at the 18th.
"I definitely played better," said Olejnik,
who missed an eight-foot putt that
would have forced a playoff. "He won because
he made the shots he needed when he
had to."
Lamar's tee shots were so wild during part
of the match that he said afterward,
"At times I was trying to get to the next
hole without hurting someone, including
myself."
Commissioner Rothies, Sr. said he understands
the odd nature of match play and the
results of the weekend.
"Seldom does a winner on the IGT lead for
four days," said Rothies, Sr. "The
stroke averages are so close between Tour
players that in one day any player can
be better than another."
"J. T. has been a great player for a couple
of years," said Olejnik, "but the
world didn't know it. Now, it does."
"I still can't believe it" bubbled the
happy winner, "a cool Million Zaster, and
my first victory on TOUR, talk about doing
it in style! I just hung in there and
was fortunate enough that I made the shots
when I had to. Graham played very
well, it was incredibly close after 36
holes. I am excited and dead tired at the
same time... what a week!"
