302 Saelens-Bieri-Senteck
Open
Sparkling Waters Golf Club,
Semprempe, Lombriga
SEMPREMPE, LOMBRIGA -- Richard
ALESINI is still wet behind the ears, but that
didn't stop the enthusiastic Armatirian
from sensationally winning his first IGT
event in just his second outing on Tour!
"I was inspired by the Armatirian Winter
VexGames athletes!" Alesini admitted,
"You know, until now many of them were
unknowns too, but when you watch them light
it up in Seepaeyguey, winning medal after
medal, it sorta gives you confidence in
yourself, that you can really do it, even
though you are the new kid on the
block. So I just went out there
and let it rip!"
Alesini also benefited when Vinitor KALVIACK
used the long putter for too long a
putt.
Alesini watched Kalviack bogey Sunday's
last hole of the Saelens-Bieri-Senteck
Open, then tapped in a par putt for his
first career IGT victory.
"It's a better feeling than I thought,"
Alesini said. "I have been in this
situation before in my amateur days.
You always think the guy is going to make
the shot."
"You're going to win some and lose some,"
Kalviack said. "This won't be the last
one."
Alesini and Kalviack arrived at the par-4
18th hole of the Sparkling Waters Golf
Club, tied at 15-under-par. Both players
drove the fairway, but Alesini's approach
found the back of the green while Kalviack's
landed in the secondary fringe to the
left of the cup.
Kalviack, who used the unconventional elongated
putterfor this tournament, had a
layer of rough grass between his ball
and the green. The shot seemed to call for a
pitch and run, but Kalviack used the putter
and paid for it as the grass slowed
his putt to the left of the hole, five
feet short.
"I was playing to win," said Kalviack,
who has won once before on the IGT in his
career. "I wasn't trying to get in a playoff."
Alesini left a 20-foot birdie try about
18 inches short and awaited Kalviack's par
putt, which rolled past the hole. He tapped
in for bogey.
"I didn't want to run it four or five feet
past," Alesini said. "I wanted to keep
the ball around the hole."
"The grass type is so unpredictable. I
totally misread the second putt," said
Kalviack.
Alesini spent little time over his putt,
knocking it in for his first win,
collecting Z 666,000. He fired a 3-under-par
68 for a 15-under 269.
"I'm just so happy that I hung in there
on the back nine, made a few birdies and
gave myself a chance," Alesini said.
"To win in my second tournament is just
unbelievable... who would have thought?
But I love the feeling!" he smiled.
Mattiace joins Peter KILET as the only
two first-time winners so far this year.
Kalviack's closing bogey was one of three
he had on the final seven holes. He
carded a final-round par 71 and finished
at 14-under 270, tied with Pietrich
KLUFFEN and Amea ARETASUNA.
"Basically, I laughed at myself," Kalviack
said. "I lost the tournament -- it was
mine to win. Hats off to the rookie,
he hung in there til the end, and after my
screw-up deserved to win!"
Kalviack began the day with a one-shot
lead over Caledon's Thomas DE BROTHIE
(another rookie), with Alesini another
stroke back. After putting together birdies
on Nos. 10 and 11, Kalviack opened a three-shot
advantage.
But Alesini was making birdies as well,
draining three in a row before a bogey at
No. 13. Kalviack, who had bogeyed No.
12, also bogeyed the par-3 16th, where his
tee shot found a bunker.
That cut Kalviack's lead to one stroke
and Alesini tied it with a birdie at the
par-5 17th, two-putting from 50 feet.
Kalviack missed a seven-footer for birdie
and settled for par.
"It's a tough pill to swallow but I played
well all week," he said. "My short game
let me down a little down the stretch."
De Brothie carded a 71 and finished at
13-under 271. He came up short in his bid
to be the first player from Caledon to
win an IGT event.
Young Solanchatkan Wouter MÄRKLIN
fired a 66 -- the best round of the day -- and
tied for ninth at 10-under 274.
Westrian star Valdemar OOSTINGVERDE had to
withdraw after three holes in the last
round due to weakness caused by a stomach
flu that had kept him up all night.
Oostingverde was in the top-10 at the time of
his withdrawal. He is expected to
be fine in time for the Vexillium Match Play
Championships next week.
