Games 175-189 (VexGames 299 Morania City) 07-15-299 until 07-28-299
Game 175: Westria - Drinomar (07-15-299)
The Technical Information:
Final score: WESTRIA 1 - DRINOMAR 0, in overtime
Played in: Vexillium Stadium, Morania City, Morania
Attendance: 50,600
Referee: Peter Claris (Morania)
Goals: Theunissen (WES, 104.)
Yellow cards: Sanchez (DRI, 5.), Nadeschney (WES, 44.), Kald (DRI,
67.)
Substitutions: Salamanta for Guydenvaldt (WES, 50.), Tortala for Lorisimo
(DRI,
61.), Sebastian for Fandano (DRI, 94.)
Match commentary:
Westria barely advances with a single goal!
The winner was predicted correctly by everybody, but nobody thought
that it
would end up a 1-0 win in overtime.
The game started off at a furious pace, with tackles flying everywhere,
resulting in Drinomar's Sanchez receiving a yellow card for a nasty
tackle
from behind on Valentin Yoghurt. This continued fervently for the remainder
of the half, and many free kicks were given by the hometown referee.
Westria repeatedly were close to scoring, with the Drinomari goal-keeper
being worked to the limit. Their master goalkeeper even saved a penalty
in
the 29th minute that was taken by Ottwald Zeschgl, one that went two
feet
in from the left post, yet was still blocked, and kicked down field.
But Drinomar was not without their chances too. After the goal-scare
of the
29th minute, Drinomar launched a bigger and better attack, this time
with
Gunther Hasenpfeffer spending more time in the air than on the ground!
There were also many shots that were surely played in highlight reels
across the planet for the calibre of saves. But when Patrick Nadeschney
got
an undeserved yellow card in the box just before half time, a large
section
of fans from the Realm booed and jeered Peter Claris, who later remarked,
"I've had some unwanted decisions before, but this has to take the
cake."
Claris was also hit in the ribcage by a coin, thrown by a man from
Baben-Overbaben, who was spotted by an eagle-eyed policeman. That man
was
arrested and taken away to Morania City police headquarters. Claris
escaped
with a bruise on his stomach, but was able to continue refereeing the
game.
But coming back to the penalty, as the Drinomari player lined up to
take
the shot, he slipped slightly on the grass, causing his footing to
be
wrong, which led to the kick being placed wide of the right post.
Half time came, and obviously each coach decided to deploy their special
ultra-defensive tactics, in anticipation of the other continuing with
their
special ultra-offensive tactics. They were both proved wrong, and the
ball
rarely went further than 30 yards away from the half way line for fifteen
minutes. That was until Lorismo found an opening in the Westrian defence
in
the 58th minute, and took a magnificent solo effort to the edge of
the box.
In Hasenpfeffer's charge, though, he was too aggressive, so he ended
up
conceding a penalty attempt to Lorismo.
But when it came to Lorismo taking the penalty, as he started his run-up,
he abruptly stopped, kneeled down, and started worshipping Gunther
Hasenpfeffer. But HP immediately thought this to be a trick, so he
remained
focussed on the task. Meanwhile, Lorismo had got up and was jumping
up and
down, yelling "Moún's Will Be Done!!! Moún will carry
this ball past the
keeper!", and promptly kicked the ball, letting it roll at five miles
an
hour, Hassenpfeffer picked it up, and kicked it downfield. It was believed
that Lorismo hallucinated and saw Moún standing between the
ball and
Hasenpfeffer. Nevertheless, the Drinomari coach quickly substituted
him for
Tortala.
After the incident of Lorismo's conversion, the laugh had done the Westrian
players good, relieving some of their nervous tension. They therefore
played much more fluently, easily slipping past the Drinomari defence
on
some occasions, but never being able to convert their opportunities
into
goals, with many shots going over, wide, or over and wide. This even
included a golden opportunity to score, where Kald fouled Alicanti
on the
edge of the box, receiving a yellow card. Heribert Hallsetter took
a very
good free kick, bending round the wall, but the Drinomari keeper was
on the
ball, and he tipped it off on to the post, and was booted away by Kald.
For the final 20 minutes of regulation time, it was mainly a midfield
game,
and was destined to be the first extra-time game of the VexGames. That
was
proven, and at the end of ninety minutes, the score was 0-0. By then
the
only people sure that Westria would get a medal at the VexGames were
fans
of a very select group of die-hard fanatics.
As Peter Claris blew the whistle for the first period of extra time,
both
teams were needing to be speeding to get a goal. That led to the two
goalkeepers being both constantly occupied, playing very well, showing
that
the position of goalkeeper requires a steady nerve and a lot of skill,
which the forwards didn't have. Drinomar still couldn't convert, despite
the fact that they had brought on their secret weapon, Sebastian.
And finally, as the curtain was about to close on the first period of
injury time, it took twenty-nine seconds flat to get the ball from
Hasenpfeffers hands to Drinomar's demise, with a long kick up field
to
Iohannes Theunissen, who passed it off to Patrick Nadeschney. Nadeschney
took it down the wing, and did a textbook cross to Zeschgl. He took
a shot,
but it came off the post. Theunissen got the rebound, and lobbed it
over
the keeper to send Westria into the quarter-finals, where they would
face
Lamb's Cove.
So overall, a very demanding game on the players, particularly the
goalkeepers, a game that left everybody knowing that Westria would
not
advance easily, and Drinomar was possibly the next Brolecia, ie an
emerging
nation coming out with tenacious defending. Bring on the Dukes!

20 minutes,
but Lamb's Cove could hold on to their narrow win.
-----
Game 177: Westermarc - Djeriga (07-16-299)
The Technical Information:
Final score: WESTERMARC 4 - DJERIGA 0
Played in: Vexillium Stadium, Morania City, Morania
Attendance: 49,900
Referee: Walter Burschnwackl (IWK)
Goals: Saabah (WMC, 3.), Fang (WMC, 25.), Fang (WMC, 39.), Foit (WMC,

(DJR,
45.),
Lunn for Singhraj (WMC, 53.), J. Fooey for Fang (WMC, 53.)
Match commentary:
Before the game, all the signs were pointing towards an easy win for
Westermarc. The only people who actually believed that Djeriga had
a
chance, were the Djerigans themselves, and Kyle 'Kazza' Youngson of
Brolecia's The House Of Soccer, a soccer magazine show which is half
information, half soundbites. Kazza was only impersonating Akhbaar
Fahz,
the Supreme Alliant of the small island country.
Before the game, the Djerigans had said that Moún does not give
away goals
easily, and that Westermarc had spent theirs against Brolecia in New
Cologne, which was merely an easy 4-1 win after Peter Smyth was sent
off.
The Djerigans, as usual, were confident of victory, saying that their
fellow disciples were in the stands cheering for Moún.
In the changing sheds, there were quite different attitudes. The Djerigans
were merely being told by Kapek that they only needed to follow Moún's
wishes. The Westermarcians were being told that it would be a disgrace
if
Djeriga should take the ball from the pitch today, which is what they
did
in Copa VexaNova when they scored a goal. Westermarc were also confident
of
victory. None the less the referee Valter Burnschwackl of IWK had come
prepared with extra balls.
When walking out of the tunnel, as the Djerigan goalie Muthannak reached
the sponsors signs, he stopped in his tracks, and turned white. When
Al-Fhuli bumped into him, he started conversing with him about what
was
wrong. Muthannak uttered only one word: "Khaled!"
The former Maurétanien, and now San Patrician striker Khaled,
was sitting
directly opposite the tunnel of Vexillium Stadium, on which he had
just
lost to Lamb's Cove. The Demon was obviously there to scare the Djerigans,
and he was wearing the black and blue of Westermarc.
The distraction certainly worked, as it only took two minutes and change
for Saabah to find the net after the Westermarc kick off, with a brilliant
crossed header, which went only a few feet away from the Djerigan keeper.
In those two minutes, Khaled had moved from his centre seat to directly
behind the Djerigan goal, and had started to jeer Muthannak.
After the goal, the Djerigan players began to lecture the Westermarcians
about Moún. Most of the Serpants ignored them, but the Imperial
Kikikira
goal-scorer, Saabah, listened for about a minute, then he could be
seen
laughing. But the Djerigans persisted in the preaching. They talked
to them
at every throw-in, corner kick, and free kick, including the yellow
card
given to Koon of Red Ensign Woochai in the 11th minute, which they
described as Moún punishing him for hurting a believer, despite
the fact
that Esfanhabib did not appear hurt at all.
Finally, in the 24th minute, Fang had got so sick of all the lecturing,
that as he was about to take a throw-in, he started yelling at Solhajji,
who had unleashed the latest round of preaching. That fired up Fang,
who
took the throw-in to Foit from half way, who gave it back. Fang then
made a
brilliant solo run past four Djerigan defenders, and three of their
midfielders, to enter the box. With perfect timing in Khaled's jeers,
Fang
easily evaded Muthannak's charge by hurdling over him, and leisurely
dribbled it towards and over the goal-line.
After that, the Djerigans brought on a renewed attack, which lasted
about
seven minutes. In that time, Djeriga took eleven shots. Two went wide,
one
went over, one was deflected out by Singhraj, and three were saved
and four
were deflected out by P. C. Nuur, who showed that he is one of the
top
keepers on the planet. It is also rumoured that Apollon Mayerantritzpoort
is looking across the Cisgronkian Ocean for a new goal-keeper.
After the eleventh, and final shot, Nuur booted the ball a whopping
distance, falling around ten yards short of Djeriga's penalty area.
It was
trapped by Fang, who took it upfield, until being cut down by Al-Fhuli,
around six inches from the edge of the box. He gained a yellow card,
which
many Westermarcian fans and players thought to be way too light, and
Fang
lined up for the free kick. Khaled was booing and jeering all of the
Djerigan players, but only Muthannak took any notice. Luckily for him,
though, the kick bent round the wall, and hit the crossbar.
This brought on a vicious attack by Westermarc, who were not successful,
because Khaled had left from behind Muthannak. So with him out of the
way,
the Djerigan keeper was at his sharpest, and deflected many shots.
That was
until Khaled returned in the 39th minute. Hearing the jeering, Muthannak
froze as Fang's volley sailed four feet to his right, and into the
back of
the net.
Khaled was obviously delighted, and celebrated like any Westermarcian
fan.
It was later reported by a San Patrician fan that Khaled had gone to
get a
bite to eat, but was delayed in getting back because many San Patrician
fans surrounded him for autographs, and many Djerigan fans threw objects
at
him.
Directly after the goal, Kapek substituted a defender, Khomeini, for
a
striker, Nafudd, in an attempt to score some goals. Djeriga kept on
making
attacks on goals in the final five minutes of the half, but the
Westermarcian defenders had no problem of relieving the ball from Djerigan
feet.
Half time came around, and the changing room atmospheres were quite
different. Coach Chekkor of Westermarc praised his players, instructing
them to sit back and defend their lead. Coach Kapek of Djeriga told
them
that they were not being very good messengers of Moún. He also
made a
midfield substitution.
Meanwhile, Khaled had left his seat, and was wandering around Vexillium
Stadium. This made Muthannak relax a little.
When Djeriga kicked off, they went straight for the goal. Westermarc
was
there, and stopped them easily. They were making nice, slow, relaxed
charges up field, which contrasted with the desparate, frantic Djerigan
offence. This was until Fang spotted Khaled on the other side of the
ground, directly behind Muthannak. He made eye contact communication,
and
it was no trouble to distract the Djerigan goalie, Fang knew this.
So he
launched a quad-attack with Foit, Bulunghia, and Cirrus. Muthannak
could
not cope under the pressure of four Westermarcians and the Demon. He
deflected the first shot by Bulunghia, taken almost from the penalty
spot,
but Foit trapped the rebound, and kicked it over the spread-eagled
Muthannak, right into the middle of the goal. It was 4-0 Westermarc,
and
even some of the most fanatical Moún believers thought that
Djeriga might
lose this one.
Three minutes later Westermarc made a double substitution, bringing
on
Mickey Fooey's brother as a forward, and Lunn in defence. The changes
did
not matter, as the last forty minutes was a back and forth game in
the
contrasting styles of play. Westermarc unhurriedly, Djeriga frantically.
Westermarc relaxed, Djeriga tensely. Westermarc slow, Djeriga fast.
Both
had their chances, but the majority of them went wide. Muthannak performed
much better, as he could no longer see Khaled.
So, an unsurprising first round result was the outcome. Westermarc goes
on
to face Brolecia in a rematch of the game only five days before in
New
Cologne. Djeriga and their fans board flights bound for Westria, en
route
to Djeriga. Nobody was surprised at the scoreline.
At the end of the game, the Djerigan players lay down on the new pitch
of
Vexillium Stadium, waiting for the apocalypse, when Khaled, armed with
a
special pass, started running around them, to the delight of the
Westermarcian players and fans. The Djerigans now have another word
for
demon: Valtaburnshvakl, named after the referee, Valter Burnschwackl
of IWK.
Westermarc are now highly favoured to advance to the semi-finals through
Brolecia, who is without the suspended Peter Smyth, and the not fully
fit
Stefan Möller, both of which are players in the prestigious Schnysna
Superiorship in Westria. But the bookies are not
entirely writing Brolecia off, because they must be holding a grudge
from
their match against Westermarc. On to the quarter-finals!

Match commentary:
Sweet revenge for Brolecia, obliterating Westermarc after the Serpents
lost their
star defender Singhraj to a twisted ankle in the 27. minute.
Brolecia playing

Heartbreaking loss for IWK in the final minutes. Suspenseful match

trio in the

After Christiana starts with the lead as expected, major upset victory
by Eastern
Delgamia, as the Knights fade away soon. Ie once again shines
brightly, scoring
twice. Christiana can't seem to get back into the groove, despite
several in-game
adjustments. Eastern Delgamia is riding their own momentum and
seal the victory
with a late goal by Dragunhe. Major surprise!

for Möller (BRO,
75.)
Match commentary:
Brolecia plays another killer match to overcome Westria, whose late
charge yielded
one goal, but came up short. Brolecia's best win yet, with a
performance
comparable to that against Westermarc. Westria did not play their
best, were
simply beat by a better team that day. Brolecia on to the finals!
-----
Game 187: Whitlam - Eastern Delgamia (07-24-299)
SEMIFINAL MATCH
The Technical Information:
Final score: WHITLAM 5 - EASTERN DELGAMIA 2
Played in: Vexillium Stadium, Morania City, Morania
Attendance: 58,900

(WHI, 86.)
Yellow cards: none
Substitutions: Cumkarago for Oitienta (EDE, 45.), Testodasertan for
Idoinhe (EDE,
45.)
Match commentary:
Whitlam pulled ahead clarly, controlling the game, but EDE would not
give up,
launching an initiative in the second half, and actually pulling within
one goal.
However, their charge was foiled by an unfortunate penalty, which Blacklock
converted, after which Whitlam retook control, and eventually ended
up winning
comfortably, and perhaps higher than deserved.

Game 188: Westria - Eastern Delgamia (07-27-299)
BRONZE MEDAL MATCH
The Technical Information:
Final score: WESTRIA 0 - EASTERN DELGAMIA 3
Played in: Vexillium Stadium, Morania City, Morania
Attendance: 60,000
Referee: Greg Stoneley (Whitlam)
Goals: Cinziento (EDE, 35.), Abeiradela (EDE, 41.), Ie (EDE, 72.)
Yellow cards: Pakiete (EDE, 22.), Voyden (WES, 41.)
Substitutions: Cumkarago for Ointienta (EDE, 45.), Operassunhe for
Bentile (EDE,
63.)
Match commentary:
A disinterested Westria played listless after losing any chance for
the gold, much
in contrast to Eastern Delgamia, who obviously wanted the bronze medal
as much as
anything. EDE once again showed grand form, as they had against
Christiana,
beating the Westrians in a complete surprise result 3-0, the highest
loss the
Diamonds have ever received in history! Westria disappointing,
and clearly eager
to get back home for the start of their domnestic league. Some
changes in the
lineup might well be in order, coach Schrey's job may be in danger.
Overjoyed
Eastern Delgamians receive their medal, quite a sensation, and rather
unexpected
before the competition began!
-----
Game 189: Whitlam - Brolecia (07-28-299) GOLD
MEDAL MATCH
The Technical Information:
Final score: WHITLAM 0 - BROLECIA 3
Played in: Vexillium Stadium, Morania City, Morania
Attendance: 61,000
Referee: W.-C. Benzhin (Westermarc)
Goals: Prebble (BRO, 44.), Rhodes (BRO, 64.), Maarouf (BRO, 71.)
Yellow cards: Ramudeira (BRO, 56.)
Substitutions: J. Ozi for Möller (BRO, 45.), Ibanez for Parkin
(WHI, 67.)
Match commentary:
Another sensational match by Brolecia finally makes them break through
as one of
Vexillium's premier sides, after beating Westermarc, Westria, and Whitlam,
they
take the gold medal in commanding fashion, and confirm the earlier
prophecies by
some experts who predicted the potential of this team. Incredible
turn-around for
the Barons after the disheartening loss to Westermarc at home, they
showed true
grit and real class. For Whitlam, yet another runner-up finish
after the IVEFA
Masters, but the silver medal as consolation, not a bad result after
the struggles
in the close games with Morania and IWK. Brolecia's defense effectively
disarmed
the Dragon's triple attack. Brolecia never looked in danger of
losing the gold
medal. Congratulations to all medal winners!
